myanmar (burma) benefit event
This weekend, the Q Cafe will be hosting a benefit event to raise awareness and aid for those suffering from starvation, lack of clean water, malaria, cholera, and/or the loss of loved ones due to Cylclone Nargis, which wiped out villages and the beloved homes of men, women, and children in Myanmar (Burma).
As a cafe and as a part of the global community, we truly encourage you, a fellow part of the community, to come to the event. The benefit event is this Saturday, May 17th, 6pm to 9pm with doors opening around 5:30pm. The event will include a showcase of local musicians and a silent auction along with food and drinks donated by local businesses. Also, proceeds from the door and raised during the event will go towards World Aid, a Ballard, WA organization that supports and distributes aid to groups and individuals in Burma and along the Thai-Burma border.
In addition, we, at the Q Cafe, will be giving 10% of our May sales towards Burmese relief efforts. Therefore, as a customer, 10% of each purchase that you make will go towards supporting men and women suffering and fighting to survive after the devastation of Cyclone Nargis.

Will this event really make a difference or is it a showcase for ego. Myanmar's
relief efforts were stopped by the dictators that rule there, how is your relief
getting through? What about China? Will you have a concert for them as well?
Do all the musicians that will play really care, or is it just another gig.
Keep it real...
First and foremost, thank for your honesty.
To answer your questions, World Aid, the organization that we are supporting, already has contacts and people who are actively dispensing aid in Myanmar. Even before Cyclone Nagris hit, they have been working in Myanmar advocating for peace, justice and also providing aid and care for those in need.
In regards to the show, all of the musicians who played had little time to prepare for the benefit event, but it was amazing to see how much energy they put into it. The musicians, event organizers, volunteers, and those who came out all truly cared, and it was amazing to see that, last night.
Being several continents away, it is a struggle to know what we can do and how we can help. But, in my heart, I would like to believe that doing something is better than nothing. As a cafe, we strive to do this not only through hosting this benefit event but also our monthly giving of 10% of our profits to non-profit organizations striving to make a difference locally and globally. Even in our process of picking a coffee roaster and tea provider, we strove to be aware of how our decisions impact others in the global community.
As a cafe, we care. We truly do, and we strive to make positive decisions out of that care.
Therefore, let us know if you or anyone else would like to do a benefit event (or show) on behalf of the men, women, and children in China, and we would love to support you in your care for others, as well.
