community cause

Q Cafe is a neighborhood community that seeks to care more than just the bottom line. While desiring to be a great cafe with great coffee and tea, we also want to be committed both to the local community and global world.  Because of this commitment, there are three main things we seek to do: copy-of-qcommunity.jpg ONE | Partner with roasters or providers that serve fair trade/direct trade coffee and exhibit a growing commitment and relationship with local coffee farmers and environment. TWO | 10% of all cafe sales go to outside local and global non-profit organizations.  Each month's receipient will also be highlighted through the cafe website to raise awareness. THREE |  Host events - fundraisers, film screenings, benefit music shows, discussions groups - to help raise awareness on local and global causes and issues.

November 10% of Sales goes to: Local Food Banks

WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE Q? Q Cafe Welcomes HEAL Africa to its space! HEAL Africa joined the Q Café office space in September. The team of four people exists to support the work of HEAL Africa in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, a hospital and community outreach program employing over 200 Congolese people. HEAL Africa works in a region of the country that has been brought to its knees in a bloody regional war which began with the spillover of the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Claiming over 5 million lives over the last 12 years, armed groups from Congo and from neighboring countries continue to vie for power and natural resources in a country endowed with the largest amount of mineral wealth per sq km in the world. An orthopedic and fistula repair training hospital in its inception, HEAL Africa expanded its vision to not just treat physical ailments, but to tackle prevention issues at a community level. Recognizing that health problems are the visible symptoms of greater societal ills, HEAL Africa equips communities with the tools to develop themselves. This manifests itself through initiatives such as: - Training rural healthcare professionals - HIV AIDS prevention and treatment programs - Public education about the law and human rights - Micro-grants and collective health insurance - Widows and orphans support structures - Inter-religious dialogue and community action In addition, the hospital performs over 1600 surgeries a year, operating with 7 Congolese specialists, 14 residents, and 28 nurses. HEAL is also renowned for its work in combating sexual violence through both medical and social avenues. HEAL Africa in the US is actively involved in advocacy and awareness-raising. Q Cafe Welcomes ONE DAY'S WAGES to its space! One Day’s Wages [ODW] is a new international nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting the very complex and staggering reality of global poverty. Our strategy is simple: through the creation of a viral global movement and community, we invite each person to give one day’s wages for the fight against global poverty. If a person’s wages for a single day can not save the world, they can dramatically impact a child’s life; consider then what millions giving their daily wages and renewing the pledge each birthday could accomplish. Our goal for the organization and website is to create a global community for the purposes of: 1) information and education, 2) collection and distribution, and 3) collaboration and innovation. Our goal is to invest 100% of all donations to small organizations and partners around the world that are already fighting extreme poverty. While not exclusive, our vision is to focus on small NGOs [Non‐Government Organization] and CBOs [Community Based Organization (<$100k budget) around the world and engage in larger grants of microfinance, and granting seed money for future ventures.  Our firm convictions are that there are men, women, children, and organizations [official and unofficial] already on the ground that fully understand their local context and community.  They are doing amazing work to not only fight global poverty but building infrastructures to ensure life. Our goal is to raise $1 million by 2010, $5 million in 5 years and $25 million+ in the next 20 years. Ideally, our goal is to raise as much money as possible and redistribute 100% of those funds around the world to the fight of global poverty.
